We compare nine carbon accounting platforms for pharmaceutical companies. Terrascope makes one of them and ranks itself first; we describe the others from their own websites and analyst reports.
Most of a pharma footprint sits with suppliers: active ingredients, contract manufacturing, packaging and distribution. iNova Pharmaceuticals found Scope 3 was 99% of its total.
The platform has to collect and check data from contract manufacturers and API suppliers, and estimate the products they have not reported.
Deadlines are close. California SB 253's first Scope 1 and 2 reports are due 10 November 2026. The NHS asks suppliers for all relevant global Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from April 2027.
Eight questions to take into a vendor demo are at the end.
For many pharmaceutical companies, most of the carbon footprint sits with suppliers. Active ingredients come from chemical makers, finished doses often come from contract manufacturers, and packaging and cold chain logistics add more. iNova Pharmaceuticals measured its footprint and found Scope 3 was 99% of the total.
So the platform to pick is the one that handles that supply chain. It should collect data from contract manufacturers and API suppliers, estimate products when they send nothing, and keep a trail an assurer can follow.
Terrascope makes one of the nine platforms below, and we have put it first. Read the ranking with that bias in mind. We describe the others from their own websites and the 2026 analyst reports, and say who each one fits. The questions to take into a demo are at the end.
| Platform | Best for | Pharma fit |
|---|---|---|
| Terrascope | Pharma and consumer health companies that make products through contract manufacturers | Supplier campaigns for contract manufacturers and API suppliers; product footprints without supplier data; PACT Version 3; iNova case study |
| Watershed | Large enterprises with an established sustainability team | Supplier portal; EcoVadis data partnership; product footprints |
| Sweep | Multi-entity groups that want a wider ESG data platform | Healthcare page; supplier interfaces; product footprints across a catalogue |
| Sphera | Chemical-heavy supply chains that need LCA depth | Supplier PCF Calculator; LCA databases |
| CO2 AI | Free supplier and product footprint exchange at scale | Pharma page covering APIs and clinical trials; PACT Version 3 |
| IBM Envizi | Groups consolidating data across many sites | Supply Chain Intelligence portal; Astellas Pharma |
| SAP | Companies that run on SAP | Footprints inside the ERP; allocation schemes; Catena-X and PACT exchange |
| Persefoni | Finance-led disclosure programmes | Free footprint tool for suppliers |
| Greenly, Normative | Mid-sized manufacturers and CDMOs | Pharma pages covering CDMOs, APIs and packaging |
Any carbon platform will add up the data you load. Pharma supply chains need five things on top of that.
[In-text graphic to come: where a pharma company's footprint sits, from owned sites (Scope 1 and 2) through API and excipient suppliers, contract manufacturers, packaging and cold chain distribution (Scope 3), with iNova's 99% Scope 3 share as the anchor.]
Best for: pharmaceutical and consumer health companies that make or source products through contract manufacturers and need an audit-ready Scope 1, 2 and 3 footprint in weeks.
Terrascope measures corporate and product footprints in one platform. Finance exports, supplier spreadsheets and bills of materials go in as they are. Machine learning matches each line to an emission factor and gives each match a confidence score.
For contract manufacturers and API suppliers, Terrascope runs supplier campaigns. Each supplier gets a guided workflow to submit a corporate footprint with an allocation ratio, or a product footprint. The platform flags missing values, outliers and inconsistencies as data comes in. Accepted submissions become supplier-specific emission factors in your inventory.
Many suppliers send nothing in the first year. For those products, Terrascope estimates a cradle-to-gate footprint from the bill of materials, process and packaging, in line with ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard. Pokka footprinted 4,980 SKUs this way, and the estimates were about 92% accurate against actual data for 700 of them. WBCSD lists Terrascope as conformant with Version 3 of PACT, the framework for exchanging product footprints between companies.
iNova Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharma company headquartered in Singapore, sells more than 1,100 SKUs in over 75 markets, mainly through third-party manufacturers. It had relied on spend-based estimates. Terrascope measured its FY'23 Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions across more than 700 SKUs, matching activity data to over 50,000 emission factors. Packaging and specific shipments came out as major drivers, and Terrascope modelled the cost and benefit of each reduction lever.
Ernst & Young has assured Terrascope's methodology, and each figure keeps its lineage back to the source document. Dyno Nobel used that trail to complete limited assurance over 1.6 million tonnes of Scope 1 and 2 emissions. For the written disclosure, the climate reporting module maps the 86 disclosures of IFRS S2, the basis of the SGX rules and AASB S2. It drafts each one from your own documents for your team to review.
Terrascope is a Leader in the 2025 IDC MarketScape for carbon management. Its climate and carbon specialists work with your team from the first upload to the assurer's questions, as part of the subscription. The pharmaceuticals page covers API manufacturing, cold chain and packaging in more detail.
Best for: large enterprises with an established sustainability team that want supplier data and product footprints in one platform.
Watershed, based in San Francisco, is a Leader in the 2026 Verdantix Green Quadrant for enterprise carbon management software. It also says it is a Leader in the 2026 Forrester Wave for sustainability management software. Its supply chain module sends data requests, targets and reduction plans to suppliers through a guided portal.
In March 2026 Watershed partnered with EcoVadis to bring supplier-reported emissions into the platform in place of broad averages. Watershed shows Bristol Myers Squibb and Johnson & Johnson among its customer logos, and lists Thermo Fisher Scientific as a user of its product footprints.
Best for: multi-entity groups that want carbon accounting inside a wider sustainability data platform.
Sweep, headquartered in Paris and London, is a Leader in the 2026 Verdantix Green Quadrant for enterprise carbon management software. Sweep also says it is a Leader in IDC's 2026 MarketScape for carbon accounting and management applications. Its healthcare page shows Sanofi, Cytiva and Synthon among its customers.
Supplier interfaces collect primary Scope 3 data. Sweep states that its product footprints follow ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard, across a full catalogue.
Best for: companies with chemical-heavy supply chains that want life cycle assessment depth and product footprints from suppliers.
Sphera, based in Chicago, makes the LCA software formerly known as GaBi and is a Leader in the 2026 Verdantix Green Quadrant for enterprise carbon management software. Its Supplier PCF Calculator, which Sphera describes as complimentary, lets a supplier enter its bill of materials and get a cradle-to-gate footprint. Sphera also brings BASF's supplier footprint method into its software, which helps where APIs and solvents come from chemical suppliers.
Best for: companies that want to collect supplier and product footprints at scale at no cost to suppliers.
CO2 AI was created by Boston Consulting Group and has been an independent company, based in Paris, since 2023. Its pharmaceuticals page covers facility-level manufacturing emissions, API and raw material supply chains, product footprints and clinical trial operations.
Suppliers respond through its Supplier Engagement Hub without a licence, and its product footprint exchange is free for clients and suppliers. WBCSD lists CO2 AI as PACT conformant at Version 3. In September 2026 it partnered with EcoVadis on supplier emissions data.
