The Challenge

As part of its construction systems business, BBR VT manufactures complex iron and steel products in several countries, including some subject to the EU Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) when exporting to the European Union. The introduction of the CBAM marks a landmark step in the decarbonisation of global trade, requiring importers to report the embedded emissions of covered goods during the transitional phase and, ultimately, to purchase CBAM certificates corresponding to their carbon content.

To prepare for these requirements, BBR VT sought to:

●      Build a robust, repeatable framework for CBAM reporting aligned with EU methodology.
●      Engage all relevant suppliers to collect accurate emissions data.
●      Ensure full compliance and internal readiness for future CBAM cycles.

Our Approach

BBR VT already had a strong foundation in corporate carbon footprinting (CCF) through its partnership with Terrascope, which had supported the company to conduct annual greenhouse gas assessments since 2023. Leveraging this foundation, Terrascope and RESET Carbon partnered to extend carbon management from the corporate level to the product and supplier levels, combining Terrascope’s data intelligence with RESET’s on-the-ground expertise in supplier engagement and reporting verification.
Working closely with BBR VT’s supply chain teams, the partnership delivered an end-to-end CBAM readiness and reporting solution, enabling the company to confidently comply with EU requirements while strengthening supplier capability for future data collection cycles.

Our Approach to CBAM:

1. Readiness Review

  • Mapped imported goods, supplier coverage, and emissions data sources.
  • Identified where supplier data or default values would apply under CBAM rules.
  • Set data improvement priorities, targeting engagement with 50% of BBR VT’s suppliers.

2. Supplier Engagement and Data Collection

  • Delivered training on the EU CBAM methodology and data expectations.
  • Deployed standardized, bilingual supplier data request templates aligned with the CBAM framework.
  • Supported with understanding emissions boundaries, data quality standards, and primary data requirements.

3. Data Review and Quality Assurance

  • Reviewed supplier-submitted data for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with CBAM calculation methods.
  • Applied appropriate calculation methods and modelled values where data was unavailable, consistent with EU transitional guidance.
  • Consolidated validated results into BBR VT’s CBAM Transitional Registry submission.

4. Report Preparation and Submission

  • Conducted quality control checks and supported BBR VT through internal review and sign-off.
  • Prepared and successfully submitted the CBAM report within the EU’s reporting timelines.

The Impact

The collaboration between Terrascope and RESET Carbon enabled BBR VT to confidently establish data collection processes and complete and submit its CBAM reports under the EU’s transitional phase, ensuring full compliance within the reporting deadline.

Beyond compliance, the initiative established an internal workflow that now enables BBR VT’s supply chain teams to manage future CBAM cycles, supported by clearly defined data collection and review processes. The bilingual supplier engagement resources delivered by RESET Carbon helped suppliers worldwide to better understand the EU CBAM methodology, emissions boundaries, and data quality expectations. This investment in supplier education has raised awareness and built capability for improved product-level emissions data, laying the foundation for more accurate Scope 3 reporting and long-term decarbonization.

Looking Ahead

As the EU transitions from reporting to pricing carbon, importers of CBAM-covered goods will face new challenges, from managing certificate costs (projected between €40–€90 per tonne of CO₂e) to evaluating strategies for emissions reduction and supply chain adaptation.

For companies like BBR VT, early readiness creates a clear strategic advantage. The collaboration between Terrascope and RESET Carbon delivered compliance and confidence: a data-driven, supplier-informed reporting process that equips the company for long-term decarbonisation and cost mitigation across their value chains.
